This has worked the past two times I've had to deal with this. Recommended.
Use an oil drop over the tick and a piece of paper later to extract it. Natural and effective way and without handling.
Douglas Harry -- see http://www.vet.com/dog_flea_meds/revolution.html -- basically the active ingredient enters the bloodstream and sebaceous glands, which when consumed kill the fleas (and other things) This stuff kills ticks too, just slowly.
Miguel Angel Perez -- I've tried the oil method before with mixed results. This new method works well and is quite fast.
Make sure oil is enough viscous to impede the breathing.

I remember running a parallel mandlebrot set generator on that thing (one of my first experiments with the sockets API) and using way too much laser printer toner to print out a multi-page rendition of it.

I have a question. I see those commercials where a dog has fleas then the owner comes and puts a drop of anti-flea on the dog and then it shows the dog cured. How is that one drop effective for the whole dog?
