Not addressed: where did that rogue UPDATE come from?
Takeaway: make nice with your hosting company -- they might save your bacon at some point.
I read it that "the bug" referred to in this sentence was the cause of the rogue UPDATE: "I located the bug, which turned out to be a small line of code I forgot to check regarding The Great YouTube Debacle of 2013".
It also looks like they had "a backup".
Yes, a single copy which is overwritten each time isn't quite the meaning of "backup" that's needed.

While the activity log at is nice for keeping track of posts you +1'd it contained too little information to be really useful, so I whipped up a chrome extension that rectifies this "issue" by fetching profile picture and a small text snippet for each of the posts via the Google+ API. This only works for public posts but from my experiments it seems that only public posts ever get added to the activities anyway. The extension still needs a bit of testing and clean-up, but I'll open-source it soon :)
PS. I've all sent feedback that this should be the default behaviour without the need for extra scripts :)
